I had a West Digital My Book World, and it is dead now (hard drive failure). I am not happy with the device because the read/write speed from it was very slow (limited by the low end CPU it has). Because of that, I was using it only as a back-up server and used rsync to do the automatic update.
Around the same time, I also built a ZFS/Solaris based file server using a very old computer. It might consume more power than those small NAS, but it has been stable for years and the read/write speed is fast! The only drawback of that setting is the operation system. Currently, only FreeBSD and Solaris have native ZFS support. Linux native ZFS is coming, but its non-testing version is too long overdue~~ Since, Sun has been acquired by Oracle and Oracle closed source of Solaris (ZFS b28), the future of Solaris/ZFS is not clear. I haven't tracked its open source version illumos and OpenIndiana. FreeBSD very likely will be the choice of my next big file server. Be aware that the FreeBSD's implementation is missing kernel CIFS server, which could be provided by userspace Samba server. It has native NFSv4 ACLs.
Which I haven't decided is how exactly the hard drives will be set up: raidz2 provides double-parity and will stand 2 disks failure in a 5-disk pool; but the space in the server may be limited, raidz1 might be just enough (1 disk failure in a 3-disk pool).
Optimal sizes
RAIDZ1 vdevs should have 3, 5, or 9 devices in each vdev
RAIDZ2 vdevs should have 4, 6, or 10 devices in each vdev
RAIDZ3 vdevs should have 5, 7, or 11 devices in each vdev
As for the server expansion
zpool set autoexpand=on pool
It is possible to replace each disk, one by one with larger ones to increase your pool size. It is also possible to attach a second pool to the first; for example, you could add a second raidz2 to your first, ie, a raidz2 of 6 disks, and add a raidz2 pool of 8 disks for a total of 10 data disks, 4 are protected by 2 and 6 are protected by a different 2. It is Not possible to take a raidz2 of 6 disks and add 2 to make it a raidz2 pool of 8 disks.
Why I am posting this? Because I saw a post here and I have different views.

MEDIA SERVER
