Oh, well. I just did a stupid thing. I tried to convert the VGA signal to HDMI directly by using two adapters: VGA to DVI and DVI to HDMI.
There is no signal. Why?
VGA is analog signal; DVI has both analog and digital signal; HDMI only has digital signal. So, the two adapters filter out all the signal. Oops, nice try!
Nowadays, all the fancy electronic device has HDMI input or output. But, my old laptop still only have the VGA port - looks like I have to buy a VGA/SVGA cable now ...
Here are several images for these port.
VGA
DVI
(please note the connector above doesn't have the analog pins)
Many ppl get completely confused by DVI - not realizing it can be analog, digital, or both at once. VGA is analog. End of story. Your DVI cable shown above has only digital pins, the analog ones at the end are missing.
To make matters worse, I have seen ppl connecting VGA to Component inputs, nope, that won't work, either.
thanks, you are completely correct, updating an image of DVI with analog pins
I've brought a adapter which is from DVI to VGA, whereas my monitor LCD only have input analog type. I'm using a windows7, and when I'm connect the cable from my CPU(DVI) to my LCD monitor using an converter (DVI - VGA)into the VGA input, notice there is nothing or display appear on my LCD screen, instead of just black, but my monitor is function OK after tested. I'm wonder is there any possibilities that windows7 unable to support analog type LCD monitor?
I can do DVI to VGA on windows 7. Please check your video card, if it doesn't output analog signal...
