hehe, I am fan of the most advanced technology.
And today, I am amazed by how good the MSN live messenger's ability to send and get response from an off-line user.
I think I enable my mobile setting many years ago. Since then, my messenger off-line setting shows as a mobile phone. If my friend double click it, it pops up the window and saying that I might be get charged. I have unlimited text messenge with my plan, so I will not be charged additionally for this service. Please feel free to use this function, if you think it is a better way than a phone call.
I test the function this morning, as I remember I enabled the function before. But it is not working.
So:
I went to the messenger, tools - edit my mobile setting - mobile settings (of course, check the box below to enable my friends to send me messenge)
Then, I was being linked to a website (http://mobile.live.com/Ruhp.aspx) to configure my mobile phone - proving my previous setting was not working. After I gave the phone information. I received a verification code on my phone as a text messenge. After I put it in. It is working now!!
The test was really easy. I put myself as one of my friend. Open the communication window. I am being warned that I will be charged. But I know I am fine. I send an off-line messenge to myself. I got the text messenge on my phone immediately. Then, I response the messenge on my phone, and I got a note in my MSN live messenger. Nice!
Here is my mobile setting interface after I successfully enabled my phone. Many settings ...

The obvious advantage for this service is for oversea friends, which may not be able to call me anytime they want. My mom and I always communicate over the MSN. The problem is while I am in the day, she is in the night. She always complains to me that while she saw me on the messenger, but I did not response to her. My react to it was that I was busying with other things, and might not notice it. Now, there will be a better solution that you can easily image using this neat service from the powerful Microsoft ~~
Btw, I was also using the text messenge notification service from both twitter and facebook. Somehow, the twitter service is not stable. And after I discovered the facebook for palm, I stopped the facebook notification too. I believe Apple's push notification (unfortunately, it is just suspended in the newest SDK due to some issue) is also based on some kind variant of the traditional text messenge, and Google's Android is using it as well.
